Spirits

An American Treasure

A.H. Hirsch Reserve

16 Year Old Pot Distilled Sour Mash Bourbon

• The last of the only aged pot stilled bourbon

• From the oldest licensed distillery in America before its closure in 1980

• The oldest available pot distilled bourbon in America

• One of the very few 5-star rated bourbons available

A. H. HIRSCH Reserve whiskey is the absolute highest quality bourbon available today, considered by many as the finest ever produced! Hirsch Reserve is all style, with a silky smooth texture and perfectly balanced with flavors of sweet oak, maple and spice. Hirsch Reserve Bourbon whiskey hails from the time-honored pot-still tradition; slow, costly, work intensive, but a delicious relic of American history. A thick-textured whiskey, perfectly balanced, which coats the mouth. Rich, complex flavors, very spicy, with plenty of mint, evergreen, dried apricots, toffee, and vanilla. Long soothing finish.

Hirsch Reserve 16yo Humidor Collector’s Edition - $1,339.99

This is an exquisite, keepsake presentation for the last remaining bottles of the legendary A.H. Reserve 16 year old Bourbon. The humidor is handcrafted mahogany, and includes a scroll with an in-depth look at the spirited history of Michter’s Distillery, a certificate of authenticity, a custom made heavy-metal T-Cork, and the one-of-a-kind (soon to be ‘none-of-a-kind’) - A.H. Hirsch Reserve 16 year old bourbon. The bottle is hand-blown and numbered.

Bowen’s Whiskey $38.99

Bowen’s unique small batch American whiskey is made for trailblazers that seek and value true guts, quick wit, and a smooth finish. Combining a proprietary family recipe and distillation process, Bowen’s Whiskey challenges pretentious “norms” capturing the heart and soul of the mighty oak with a distinct campfire aroma. Produced in Bakersfield, California, known to many as the West Coast’s concentrated mecca of oil tycoons, agricultural pioneers and some of Country music’s most revered renegades, Bowen’s 90 proof whiskey strives to embody its hometown’s history of grit and innovation by turning out an original spirit that bucks the crowd, seducing us all, one smokey sip at a time. No artificial coloring or flavoring.

Glenfiddich Malt Master- $85.99

This brand new, limited-edition whisky should be easier to find than the new 1974 edition, but with 18,000 bottles made, you’re not going to find it at Safeway. The Malt Master in question is Brian Kinsman, and this unique bottling is offered as an homage to Glenfiddich’s 125th anniversary. The company’s first double- matured spirit, this non-age-statemented whisky spent 6 to 8 years in ex-Bourbon barrels, then 4 to 6 years in sherry casks. That’s a long time in sherry, which is why you might not really peg this as a roughly 10-year-old Scotch when you crack it open. The sherry is big on the nose, with smoldering oak wood underneath. There’s not nearly that much citrus-fueled sherry on the palate, though, with distinct gingerbread character, with a chewy nougat, almost granulated sugar texture to it. Candied cherries give this a fruitcake feeling, along with some caramel and banana notes in the finish. The conclusion calls back to the Bourbon barrel. You get a hint of it as the final notes fade.

Charbay R5 Unaged Whiskey 750ml - $49.99

What do you get when you distill Bear Republic’s Racer 5 IPA into whiskey? You get Charbay’s newly released R5 Hop Flavored Whiskey. It comes in both aged and un-aged varieties. Wine Enthusiast gave the R5 Clear un-aged whiskey a high rating of 93 points. The R5 Clear has “fruity, floral and green spicy aromas with hop and malt tones.”

Charbay R5 Aged Whiskey 750ml - $71.99

The R5 aged whiskey sat in French oak casks for 22 months. Hops and malt flavors abound in this whiskey. “You can really taste the beer that this Whiskey is made from,” says Karakasevic. Fourteen years ago, Charbay distiller Marko Karakasevic experimented with distilling a pilsner brew into whiskey. The partnership with Bear Republic Brewing represents a growing trend of craft distilleries and breweries cooperating to create new products.

Krogstad Gamle Aquavit 750ml - $44.99

The first contemporary aquavit distilled in the United States comes from House Spirits in Portland, Oregon, the producer of the well-known Aviation gin. For many local drinkers, Krogstad is the first aquavit they try. It’s made with caraway and anise, the latter coming through strongly. House Spirits has periodically offered limited- edition aged versions called Gamle Krogstad (“gamle” means old); this year they’re releasing Gamle Krogstad as part of their main portfolio of spirits. In the meantime, here’s an excellent cocktail featuring their unaged aquavit, recently renamed Festlig (“festive”) Krogstad, a spin on the classic Negroni from Kevin Ludwig, owner of Beaker & Flask in Portland.

Norwegian Negroni

1½ oz. Krogstad Festlig Aquavit

1 oz. sweet vermouth

¾ oz. Cynar

Stir with ice, strain into a chilled cocktail glass, and garnish with an orange twist.
