2010 Hoandlhof (Manfred Nossing) Veltliner $19.99
92 Wine Advocate: “The 2010 Gruner Veltliner emerges from the glass with green pears, crisp apples and whites flowers, all of which come together in a focused, vibrant style. Bright citrus notes add focus and energy on the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2014.”– AG
2008 Fatalone Primativo Gioia del Colle $15.99
Fatalone is made from 100% Organic Primitivo grapes under the DOC Gioia del Colle in Puglia, Italy. Of all the appellations where Primitivo is allowed, Gioia del Colle — the sole hilly wine-growing area in the region, makes for wines with gorgeous freshness and lip-smacking acidity. Pasquale employs chemical free farming and spontaneous fermentation (with native yeasts) and his wines reward me with the freshness. Ruby red, intense color with violet glares. Scent and taste typically fruity of berries and slightly of black sour cherry and plum with some spicy and balsamic notes. A perfect balance of smoothness, freshness and minerality. Aftertaste of toasted almond, typical of the Primitivo of Gioia del Colle.
2008 Marion Cabernet Sauvignon $38.99
This wine is a trip. It is a Ripasso Cabernet from one of the Veneto most important winemakers. All Marion wines are made by Celestino Gaspari who was the wine maker at Quintarelli for 20 years and is consulting wine maker for Dal Forno. A nose of blue fruits and chocolate/mocha goodness. This is a wine with amazing density and power coupled with elegance and freshness. This is impressive wine: it’s got terroir, but also extreme deliciousness. It is aromatically impressive and a wine that easily draws you in and forces that additional sip from sure hedonistic joy. For such a young wine made in the Ripasso style, the expressivity was exceptional. This wine reaffirms Marion’s extremely consistent quality across its offerings and I would highly recommend it, particularly for the price.
2011 Feudo Montoni Nero d’Avola “N” IGT $13.99
Fabio Sireci’s wines From a remote vineyard in the center of Sicily, made by traditionalists from the highest of all Nero vineyards on the island, where harvest is two weeks later than most, comes this juicy and vivacious red wine made with organic grapes. Fruity aromas of strawberry, cherry and raspberry jam, it is smooth and soft in the mouth with sweet berry flavors yet well balanced acidity. This is a “light” and soft big red wine, unique and geeky yet surprisingly still super crowd friendly. N is an entry level wine to Fabio’s famous single vineyard “Vrucara”.
2009 Piaggia Il Sasso DOCG $32.99
92 Points Wine Advocate: “The 2009 Carmignano Il Sasso is striking. Freshly cut flowers, red berries, spices and mint are all woven together nicely in this vibrant, perfumed Carmignano. Layers of fruit build to an intense, mineral-laced finish. Il Sasso is mostly Sangiovese, with some Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2019.”
2009 Poggio Scalette Il Carbonaione $45.99
94+ Points The Wine Advocate: “The 2009 Il Carbonaione has elegance to burn. Polished, silky tannins frame layers of fruit as this harmonious, totally finessed wine blossoms in the glass. The 2009 is simply glorious from the very first taste. A kick of Sangiovese acidity gives the wine its lift and vibrancy on the finish. This is a great showing. Carbonaione is 100% Sangiovese (Lamole clone) grown on the hillsides of Greve. The wine spent 15 months in 350-liter oak barrels, 50% new. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2029.” – AG
2007 Casato 1 Brunello di Montalcino Voliero $62.99
95 Points Wine Advocate: “The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino is striking in this vintage, just as it was in 2006. Freshly cut flowers, spices, mint, licorice and tobacco are some of the many notes that jump from the glass in this highly expressive, engaging Brunello. The 2007 shows the freshness and energy of this hillside site on the Montosoli hill with the generosity of the vintage, a very appealing combination in my book. The finish is pure silk and finesse. Once again, the Voliero Brunello is one of the most exciting and complete wines of the vintage.” – AG
2007 Il Marroneto Brunello di Montalcino Madonna Delle Grazia $63.99
96 Points Wine Advocate: “A huge, explosive wine endowed with fabulous aromatics, beautifully delineated fruit and plenty of supporting structure. Violets, mint, licorice and black cherries develop in the glass, adding further layers of complexity and nuance. The 2007 Madonna delle Grazie possesses stunning richness and power...This is another beautifully balanced, first-class effort from Il Marroneto.” – AG
2007 Fuligni Brunello di Montalcino $67.99
95 Points Wine Advocate: “The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino is a gorgeous wine that brings together the richness of the vintage and the house’s continuing move to a more traditional style. Sweet red berries, flowers, mint, spices and anise are woven together beautifully in this large-scaled, generous wine. The wine gains volume and depth in the glass as the flavors built to a huge crescendo. The 2007 was aged exclusively in cask. This is a great showing from Fuligni.” – AG
