2009 Finca Sandoval Salia, Manchuela $9.99
91 POINTS Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate Issue # 203 Robert Parker Tasting Notes: “The unfiltered 2009 Salia is a blend of 49% Syrah, 30% Garnacha Tintorera and 21% Garnacha Tinta that was aged nearly a year in a combination of French and American oak. This outstanding, full-bodied, fleshy red offers up notes of kirsch, black cherries, black currants and licorice intermixed with loamy soil undertones. It is an impressive, ridiculously low priced beauty that should drink well for 3-4 years.”
2010 Bodegas Volver Single Vineyard La Mancha $12.49
90 POINTS Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate Issue # 203 Robert Parker Tasting Notes: “The 2010 Volver (100% Tempranillo) is a single vineyard, outstanding effort that was aged in French oak for 14 months prior to being bottled unfiltered. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by copious aromas of black currants, black cherries, pepper, underbrush and licorice. This well-made, medium to full-bodied effort should drink well for 4-5 years.”
2011 Bodegas Ordonez Nisia Verdejo Rueda $13.49
91 POINTS Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate Issue # 203 Robert Parker Tasting Notes: “The 2011 Nisia is made from 100% old vine Verdejo (the youngest vines were planted in 1942, and others are nearly 100 years of age). The wine is aged sur-lie, and fermented in both stainless steel and large format French oak. It is undeniably one of the finest Verdejos I have ever tasted. Yields were less than three tons of fruit per hectare, which is noticeable in the wine’s old vine intensity. Notions of caramelized white citrus and tropical fruit blossoms along with a naked, natural texture as well as finish make for a terrific dry white with loads of personality and complexity. This beauty sells for an absurdly low price. Enjoy it over the next year.”
2012 Bodegas Avancia Cuveé de O Godello $14.99
The winery is located in the mountains next to El Barco de Valdeorras, in the province of Orense, Galicia northwest of Spain. The grapes for this wine come from Godello vineyards located on the mountain slopes in terraces at 1,476 ft. above sea level. The steep hillside vineyards provide an excellent location to capture the sun. The winemaker, Alistair Gardner, an enologist from New Zealand created Avancia Cuvee de O from the native Godello grape. This wine has the big fruit like the popular grape albariño but with an even slightly greater level of acidity. A delicious white wine that pairs great with many dishes!
2012 Bodegas Ordonez Zerran Garnatxa Blanca $14.99
The winery is located near the town of Capcanes next to a nature reserve park. Despite the proximity to the Mediterranean this location has a high elevation, 1,500-1,800 ft. above sea level, and is buffered by a series of mountains - Serra del Llaberia and Serra de Tivissa. The varietal, Garnatxa Blanca is planted on slate, llicorella. A beautiful dry white with citrus fruit, slate, and minerals throughout the palate and a crisp, finish not to be missed.
2009 Bodegas Volver Tarima Hill Monastrell Alicante $14.99
100% Old Vines Monastrell This is a new project of Rafael Cañizares and Jorge Ordoñez. Tarima Hill comes from the older vines planted from 1935-1970. A delicious red wine with flavors of thyme, clove, black pepper and sweet wood, a savory wine with more spice and gamey notes on the rich palate.
2011 Jorge Ordonez Botani Muscat Malaga, Andalucia $15.99
91 POINTS Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate Issue # 203 Robert Parker Tasting Notes: “...It is then fermented totally in stainless steel, making it one of the most perfumed, naked expressions of dry white wine in the world. This is a killer example that people just love. Let me see if I can properly describe it. The exotic aromatics could fill a small room, with notes of flowers, honeyed white citrus, melons and hints of more exotic tropical fruit such as mango and tangerine.”
