Wines From Italy

2010 Casa Gireli “La Borgata” Montepulciano di Abruzzo $7.99

This is the third vintage of the La Borgata Montepulciano we have brought into the store and it just keeps getting better. It’s one of those wines that make you wonder why other wines are so expensive and deliver half of the pleasure on the palate. The nose opens with ripe cherries and hints of spice and purple flowers but it’s on the palate that this wine really over delivers. Intense ripe red fruits burst with a classic Italian undertone of earth.

2012 Antonio Sanguineti Vermentino $12.99

Antonio Sanguineti – known for racing European cars, and listening to opera as he zooms down the autostrada, is a man passionate for life. Perhaps more than anything, he enjoys sharing his wines with family and his friends around the world: “A truly great wine slows life down just a bit – and allows us to enjoy it more.” Vermentino is a classic Tuscan white wine that is zesty, clean, and aromatic. A staple on the Italian coast, it is an excellent wine to compliment your table.

2010 Villa Pillo Syrah Toscana $14.99

Wine Spectator 92 Points. Villa Pillo is a traditional Tuscan Farm, founded in Medieval Times, mentioned in many historical documents. It is located in the heart of the Chianti area, equidistant from the cities of Pisa, Florence and Siena. We consider all of the Villa Pillo wines at the Enoteca extraordinary values. The Villa Pillo Syrah is grown in three vineyards. The vines are trained on a vertical trellis to allow management of growing shoots and favor the development of color and flavor in the grapes. This Syrah is harvested at the peak of ripeness to enhance these classic traits. It is then aged in small French oak barrels for 15 months. A brooding, inky red, sporting plum, blueberry and roasted meat aromas and flavors. This is concentrated, coating the dense tannins easily and achieving a sense of equilibrium. Fine length. Best from 2014 through 2024. 500 cases made.–BS

2010 Fattoria del Cerro Rosso di Montepulciano $15.99

Antonio Galloni 90. The 2010 Rosso di Montepulciano is another gorgeous, totally striking wine. Sweet dark cherries, flowers, mint and tobacco are all woven together in this gracious, sleek Rosso. The 2010 impresses for its delineation, nuance and balance. This is a terrific showing. The Rosso is 90% Prugnolo Gentile and 10% Mammolo, aged 70% in cask and 30% in barrique. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016.

2008 La Maialina Chianti Classico Riserva $16.99

“The 2008 Chianti Classico Riserva shows the mid-weight, understated personality of the year in a delicate, ethereal expression of plums, black cherries, licorice and tobacco. The aromas and flavors are woven together beautifully in this gracious, totally delicious wine. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2016. This is another superb set of wines from La Maialina. Readers may recall from last year that La Maialina sources unfinished wine from one of Tuscany’s most famous estates that, understandably, wishes to remain anonymous. These are some of the very finest values in Tuscany.” Antonio Galloni

2011 Nanfro Frappato $18.99

The history of Tenuta Nanfro is ancient...a history made up of secrets and pleasures with wine as a joygul companion of life. Papa Nanfro is an original citizen of Catania (Sicily) and is determined to pass down to his sons the ancient art of wine-making. Tenuta Nanfro is situated on an estate 4 Km. from Caltagirone, an area famous around the world for its ceramics as well as its ancient wine. The temperate climate and sandstone terrain creat ideal conditions for precious wines. Frappato is a light ruby red with a fragrant and fruity bouquet. The taste of cherries and blackberries is envolped by a slight spiciness. It’s gentle tannins have a great personality and are well balance making it particularly recommended as a pairing with semi-aged cheeses and grilled fish.

2010 Argiano Rosso Di Montalcino $19.99

Tasting profile Rosso di Montalcino has an intense ruby-red color. It is medium-bodied, with good concentration in the mid-palate. The palate is elegant and well-balanced with captivating flavours of red fruits, violet, menthol and earth, all characteristics of Argiano?s terroir. A generous wine with smooth and velvety tannins that will please all Sangiovese lovers. Food-friendly, it is a perfect match with red meat, veal, bruschetta and cheese.

2001 Josto Puddu Vernaccia di Orisanto $20.99

This will be the most uniquely wonderful white wine you have tasted is some time. Vernaccia di Oristano is a sherry-like wine from Sardinia, which is distinguished from other Vernaccias only by the fact that it grows around Oristano, in the west of the island. The grapes are harvested and pressed in the standard way, then oxidatively matured in barrels for three or four years under a naturally-developing film of flor yeast. The barrels are not filled to the brim, allowing the flor to develop over the wine, controlling the rate of oxidation to a certain extent. The musty, nutty aroma which results from this ageing is known in the local dialect of Campidanese as murrai. Cettolini, a 19th-century Sardinian microbiologist (and thus particularly well placed to comment on the qualities of this wine) said of Vernaccia di Oristano that “the delicacy of its completeness conquers us... that curious taste of bitter fruit, so gracious, so seductive”.

2012 La Ginestraia Pigato $22.99

The region of Liguria has exploded on to the Italian wine scene over the past three years, delivering some of Italy’s best and most expressive white wines. The La Ginestraia Pigato is yet another gem with an aromatic base that is beguiling. The nose resonates for days with a palate that emphasizes white fruits yet still shows a wonderful note of mineral. This is a great aperitif wine and a must for seafood.

2012 Occhipinti SP-68 Rosso $24.99

Arianna Occhipinti has become the face of the new Sicilian wine scene. Once thought to be nothing more thank bulk wine producing region producers like Arianna have put in the time and delivered the quality in a very short time to make Sicily one of the most talk about regions on the planet. The SP68 is a wonderful entry level red composed of Nero d’Avola and Frappato that is macerated for 30 days.

2012 Bisson Cimixia “L’Antico” $32.99

Liguria , over the past few years has delivered some of my favorite Italian white wines varietals and Cimixia, may take the prize. This virtually extinct grape is stunning. Brilliant straw yellow. Smoothie scent, it expresses strong marks of youth tropical fruits, ripening, take a complexity of elegant vegetal marks. Taste: it expresses a feeling of freshness and warmth, this impact, supported by a high flavor and mineral mark, give the wine depth and long lasting taste. It goes well with fish dishes and medium aged cheeses, white meat.

NV Feudi di San Gregorio “DUBL” Sparkling Aglianico $46.99

Feudi di San Gregorio, a modern expression of a centuries-old tradition of passion and dedication to the land, is Campania’s premier winemaking estate. In 2003, Feudi di San Gregorio invested in the production of its first sparkling product. Using the method champenoise and the regions historic varietals of Falanghina, Greco di Tufo and Aglianico grapes, FSG produced this new innovative product, DUBL. The wines are named DUBL in honor of the two wineries that work on this project, Feudi and our French partner, the great Champagne house of Anselme Selosse. Made of 100% Aglianico the nose young and seductive. Aromas of wild strawberry and raspberry with floral and vanilla notes. The mouth takes on notes of ripe fruit and soy leaving its mark with a lingering finish.
